NCEA Level 1 Gateway

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mrs M. O'Carroll.

The Gateway programme offers students the chance to gain work experience in the industry they hope to work in when they leave school, and study industry-related unit standards that count towards a nationally recognised industry qualification.

These Unit Standards are assessed by the Industry Training Organisation (ITO) and count towards NCEA. The student is expected to attain 20 credits (at various levels) as part of their commitment to Gateway.

Student suitability is determined by attendance and behaviour checks made at school. Students must be able to work independently and keep motivated, working on their own.

An interview between the business and student is set up and if the business decides to take the student on, an agreement is signed between the workplace, school and student. After that, the student begins their work placement and their performance is monitored by the Gateway Coordinator. If the placement is not working for either the employer or the school and student, then the agreement is cancelled.

The student attends the workplace one day per week for approximately three terms. Any tools or clothing needed by the student are able to be supplied by the school.

Twizel Area School's Gateway scheme has been highly successful over the years with many students gaining apprenticeships and employment after their placements.

If you think that Gateway could be an option for you, talk to Mrs Lindsay, Gateway Coordinator or Mrs O'Carroll, Careers Advisor.
