NCEA Level 1 Physical Education

Course Description

The Physical Education programme develops knowledge and attitudes towards a healthy lifestyle using a variety of topics.

The modules covered during each year include aquatics, personal fitness testing and gymnastics, ball handling, dance, athletics and games skills. Through these topics, students extend their development of balance, coordination, reaction, agility, flexibility and endurance.

Students will participate in a variety of physical activities throughout the year and evaluate the factors that have affected their participation. They will develop an understanding of how the body functions during physical activity as well as how to learn physical skills effectively. Students will develop an understanding of the effective use of interpersonal skills in a team setting.  They will also examine the societal influences that affect their participation in physical activity. Participation and enjoyment are high priorities for this course.

The Year 11 course contributes 21 credits towards NCEA Level 1 and is covered in five modules of work. Each module is scheduled for approximately six weeks. Content may overlap in some cases.

Terms 1 & 2 focus on Outdoor Education, and terms 3 & 4 focus on Physical Education. A reasonably good level of fitness is recommended for this course, along with a positive attitude.
