Course Description

NCEA Level 1 Geography is available through NetNZ.
Geography is about the natural and cultural environments and how these interact. It is how we use the land and make it sustainable for the future. Geography is the study of how the people and the landscape affect each other.
Students are expected to conduct field research with guidance from the teacher.
Summative assessments will be at the end of the year with formative assessments held once a term to keep students informed on their progress and give them the opportunity to develop their work throughout the whole school year.
The internal standards are designed to tie in with the external topics and reinforce learning in those areas. A total of 17-21 credits will be offered in this course depending on the external assessment selected by the student.
Topics covered include:
- Extreme Natural Events - Earthquakes / Volcanic eruptions.
- Global Studies - Aging / Youthful Populations around the world.
- Contemporary Geographic Issues - An issue in your area (For example; Urban change in Kaitaia Town Centre/ Kauri Dieback in Waipoua Forest).
- Sustainability of the environment - Tourism in the Maldives
- Research with Guidance - A fieldwork investigation guided by the teacher.
Recommended Prior Learning
Access to Google Apps EDUCO, Youtube (to view private videos) websites. WhatsApp, Google Hangouts and Google Classroom will support the main VC platform of ZOOM.
Students are encouraged to have their own devices with camera and microphone capabilities.
