Fabrics (Soft Materials Technology)
In Soft Materials Technology, students design and make a range of garments and textile products to meet a design brief. There is an emphasis on creativity and trialling ideas including functional modelling. Students will gain a variety of textiles skills such as hand and machine sewing, pattern-making and adaptation, screen-printing, applique and tie-dying. They will then apply these skills to individual projects where they design for a stakeholder taking into account the stakeholder’s needs.
Students learn about the properties of materials, how textiles products are made, designing for a stakeholder and for a specific environment. Soft Materials Technology can lead to careers such as fashion designer, pattern designer/maker, textile designer, and costume designer/maker.
